Cold Email Daily Limits: How Many Emails Can You Send?

Sending too many cold emails from a fresh address is the fastest way to land in spam permanently. Here's what the limits actually are — and how to ramp up safely.

Why email daily limits exist

Email providers (Gmail, Outlook, and others) and spam filters use sending volume as one signal for identifying spam. A brand-new email address that suddenly sends 200 emails on day one looks exactly like a spam account — because that's what most spam accounts do.

Your domain also has a reputation score that builds over time. A new domain starts with no reputation — which means email providers are uncertain. Sending high volume from an uncertain sender pushes more emails into spam.

Safe cold email limits by warmup phase

These are general guidelines. The safe number varies by provider, domain age, and engagement history.

Warmup phaseDaysSafe daily sends
Cold start1–720–25 emails/day
Early warmup8–1430–40 emails/day
Mid warmup15–2140–55 emails/day
Full send22+50–70 emails/day

These limits apply per email account. To send more, connect additional email accounts — each adds another 50–70 cold emails per day at full warmup.

Gmail vs Outlook vs custom domain

Gmail and Outlook both cap total outgoing sends at 500 (Gmail) and 300 (Outlook) per day — but those limits include all outgoing email, not just cold outreach. For cold email purposes, staying well under 100/day keeps you in safe territory on either provider.

Custom domains via Google Workspace follow the same Gmail limits. If you're using a custom SMTP relay (SendGrid, SES, Postfix), the provider limits don't apply — but your domain reputation still does. High bounce rates and spam complaints will hurt deliverability regardless of your sending infrastructure.

What kills deliverability faster than volume

Volume is a factor, but these matter more:

  • High bounce rate: Sending to invalid emails tells providers your list is unverified. Keep hard bounce rate under 2%.
  • Spam complaints: When recipients mark your email as spam, it's a direct negative signal. Even a 0.1% complaint rate is considered problematic by Gmail.
  • Spam trigger words: "Free", "guaranteed", "act now", "limited offer" — these patterns trained on spam are still weighted by filters.
  • No authentication: Missing SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records make your emails easier to spoof and increase the chance of spam filtering.

How to scale beyond 70 emails/day

The math is simple: if one inbox can safely send 50–70 cold emails/day after warmup, two inboxes give you 100–140/day, three give you 150–210/day, and so on.

Use separate email accounts (on different or the same domain) and rotate sends across them. Some senders use subdomains (sales.yourdomain.com, outreach.yourdomain.com) to protect their primary domain reputation — if one subdomain gets burned, the main domain is unaffected.

With Orbitra, each email account slot (€5/mo) adds another inbox that runs warmup independently. Once warmed, the campaign manager distributes sends across all connected accounts automatically.

Summary

After a 28-day warmup, 50–65 cold emails per day per inbox is a reasonable target that most Gmail/Outlook accounts can sustain without deliverability issues. For higher volume, add more inboxes — not higher per-inbox limits.

Set a hard daily cap in your sending tool, verify your lists before import, and write short direct emails without spam trigger language. Those three things have more impact on deliverability than almost anything else.
